In an earlier work for large ensemble, I once used a kalimba with a snare drum serving as its resonator. The sense of “advancing one step at a time” that I encountered there remained a strong memory, and it returned as I set out on the present work.

This piece places two kalimbas at opposite poles of the orchestra. Their reference pitches are tuned slightly apart, producing a gap that in turn demands a harmonic oscillation from the work; starting from this oscillation, the ensemble built around the two kalimbas operates as their extension and never stops throughout the piece. The title is taken from Isaiah 62:6; among several translations of the verse, I chose the Catholic one.

Music existed before the performance and will exist after it. This piece cuts out and presents only a cross-section of it.
